In response to the coronavirus pandemic, Dallas County ISU Extension and Outreach brought up the idea of a garden as a positive and safe outdoor activity and there will be a meeting next week to further discuss it.
Dallas County Extension Master Gardener Coordinator Megan Will says they want to provide a a community garden or a donation garden, especially in Perry, where a donation garden would donate to various places to help those in need.
“We are going to have an informational meeting about kind of our results and kind of where we are heading and that’s open to anybody who’d like to join that Zoom and learn more.”
Will says there are two different plans for the garden, including a community garden where families would have their own plot of land in a larger garden and what they grow is theirs, or a donation garden where people would volunteer their time and local produce to help those with food insecurity. Will explains some options need more space.
“One thing with a community garden where everybody has their own plot you do need a decent amount of land. Even if ten people want to have a garden and you each get a ten by ten (foot spot) that’s a little chunk of land and you need a water source and that kind of thing. So, there may be a need but if we don’t have a place to put it then there becomes that problem. ”
The Zoom meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. March 1st and the information for how to register for that meeting can be found here
