While Severe Weather Awareness Week continues in Iowa, there are things you can do to protect yourself in the event of a tornado.

Dallas County Emergency Management Coordinator A.J. Seely says if someone is outside during a tornado, maybe walking the dog or driving their car, and there’s no shelter there are things you can do to protect yourself.

“The best thing to do if you are caught without any shelter is to lie flat, face down on some low ground and then protect your head with the back of your arm. So, it sounds kind of crazy to be out right in the field but that will get you to the lowest point possible and hopefully away from any flying debris and that sort of thing.”

Seely discourages seeking shelter in an overpass bridge, due to high winds causing more risk for injury.
