A project appears to be coming to fruition at a city park in Jefferson.

Jefferson Parks and Recreation Director Denny Hammen says a disc golf course will be built at Daubendiek Park. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio the construction of the 18-hole course has been fulfilled by donations and a grant through the Greene County Community Foundation. He believes the sport is trending upwards in Iowa and it has only gained popularity due to the pandemic as a socially distance activity.

“We think Jefferson is a prime location to have an 18-hole (disc) golf course, which would also then be a tournament golf course. The tournaments are catching on and those are for the real good disc golf players, but the neat thing about that is we’ll attract those real good players. Hopefully that will be helpful to the rest of the businesses that are in the town.”

Hammen says the disc golf course will enhance the existing park and won’t impede the walking trail. He adds the total cost of the construction of the course is $25,000 and no taxpayer money will be used. He encourages those who still want to make a donation can do so for added amenities such as benches and landscape along the course. Drop off donations to the Greene County Community Center.
