The 2021 property assessments are now going out to Greene County residents.
Greene County Assessor Adam Smith tells Raccoon Valley Radio property assessments are basically determined by market value, along with any new construction specifically for commercial and residential properties. Smith says for 2021, agricultural land will see the highest increase, residential will also have an increase, while commercial properties will see a decrease. Smith points out ag land is determined by the state with factors that include productivity and input costs. He believes some of the main factors leading to an increase in residential properties include lower interest rates, higher housing market and more people improving their current homes.
Smith talks about one resource that property owners can use to determine if their properties are assessed correctly.
“Now you can go to our website and do a sale search and it’ll show you, I mean you can put in a lot of different specs like square footage or style and location, and decide like, is this value what I would get if I were to sell it.”
Smith notes if you believe your property is assessed incorrectly, you have until April 25th to do an informal review in his office and until April 30th to petition the county board of review.
