The artificial turf at Carroll Athletic Field was the site of Greene County vs. Carroll High in high school soccer last night. The boys were originally scheduled to host the Tigers in Grand Junction, but the weather and field conditions prompted school officials to move the action to Carroll. The girls were scheduled to play the Tigers in Carroll all along.
Carroll won the girls’ match 10-0 with the action stopped less than nine minutes into the second half by the 10-goal mercy rule. The match was the first of the season for the Rams, and the first as a head coach for Peyton Paddock. The Tigers led 7-0 at halftime as they improved to 1-1 on the season.
Coach Carl Behne’s boys found out they were ranked third in Class 1A in the first ratings of the young season despite entering Thursday’s match with a 1-2 record. The win was against Class 2A Perry, and the losses were to 2A Humboldt and 3A Des Moines North. The match vs. Carroll ended with a victory by a 3-0 final for the Rams, but one of Iowa’s leading scorers. Greene County senior Luis Velazco, suffered a leg injury as time expired in the first half. The injury was serious enough for an ambulance crew to take him to the hospital. The senior had six of the first eight goals this season for the Rams, including both first half goals Thursday night. Reserve Chance Mccollum scored the third goal off a deflected corner kick with 5:33 to playing the contes. It was the first varsity career goal for the senior. The Rams recorded their first shut out of the season and scored three goals after getting two goals in each of their first three contests.
