A new Greene County High School class allows social media to take the forefront in education.

Kelley Gray is the instructor for Ram Fanatic which high school student Hannah Curtis says is designed to take social media and use that technology as a way to reach out to the community and promote the high school and its activities. Greta Johnson is also taking the class and tells Raccoon Valley Radio another main goal of the class is making their fellow students aware of different activities.

“We really just want to let kids know (about the different activities and events) so that they’re not missing out on things that they can take place in. It kind of just reaches out to everyone in the school because a lot of kids are using social media now. So it’s easier to get ahold of them through there (social media) than talking at school sometimes.”

The class includes social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, which Ram Fanatic has accounts on each, and community members are encouraged to stay up-to-date with activities and events, and any changes that may happen. Curtis points out the life skills this class has to offer.

“It’s just a good platform for us to learn how to do this professionally as well, because chances are we’re all going to end up doing some sort of professional marketing now. It’s just very beneficial, especially for young people who are helping older businesses really get onto the internet by using these skills that she’s (Gray) teaching us.”

The class will also have another opportunity to help local businesses with a specialized internship program, which has recently started.
