The Jefferson Sewer/Water/Street/Sanitation Committees met earlier this week.
The Sewer Committee discussed a request for a homeowner to adjust their sewer charge about water discharging from an abandoned pipe, which then went into the city’s wastewater. The committee is recommending to the City Council to credit $1,162 back to the owner after following proper procedure to do so. The committee also discussed increasing sewer rates for the wastewater plant upgrades. It was mentioned that instead of doing a seven-percent rate increase for three years, to do a 5.5-percent increase for five years. No formal action was taken by the committee.
The Water Committee decided to not pursue a water line extension on Mulberry Street north from Russell Street. A request was made for the extension, but because only one household would benefit from the extension, the committee thought it would be cost prohibitive for the result. The committee also looked at a software upgrade for the water plant, due to the age of the equipment. The committee recommended the purchase to the City Council but will require a budget amendment.
The Streets Committee recommended a quote from Blacktop Services to City Council to make repairs to Mulberry Street for $32,000. They also decided to push forward with design plans to improve the front entrance to City Hall, which is deteriorating.
