The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced the extension of the free breakfast and lunch program for all public school districts.
The extension is through June 30, 2022 and Greene County School District Superintendent Tim Christensen says that will allow students to continue to receive free breakfast and lunch. He shares his thoughts about how beneficial this program has been during the pandemic.
“(It’s) been going very well. I think our number of students eating is up, especially breakfast. One thing that they are doing at the high school, that I think is kind of is ingenious a little bit, they produce 75 sack lunches everyday. Then there’s some kids that just don’t go through the line, they just immediately pick up a sack lunch and go sit down and eat. So it’s helped open up some opportunities for kids, and increased time they have for lunch and different things. So it’s been positive.”
The program was originally extended until the end of the current school year, but with the extension, it allows parents and guardians to continue to not have to pay for their child to receive breakfast or lunch during the next school year.
