The Jefferson City Council recently approved the next fiscal year budget.
At their regular meeting last month, the Council approved $3,152,290 fiscal year 2022 budget, with revenues outpacing expenses by $12,000. City Administrator Mike Palmer says the tax levy rate for next fiscal year is $14.91 per $1,000 of property valuation. He examines the two different categories that make up the total tax levy.
“The general (fund) rate is going down slightly. This year the debt (service) levy will go up just a hair for a couple of years. Then that will start heading back down rapidly. It’s good news on the taxing front that the rates are starting to go down (and) that’s primarily because we’re seeing an increased valuations in the properties.”
Palmer notes that while all city departments are mostly conservative in their budget projections, there is another safeguard in place.
“We’ve put together a really good finance committee that we meet every month and do a lot of in-depth overview of different expenses. So we’ve got a really good handle of where we are from month to month.”
The 2022 fiscal year starts July 1st.
