There are no major road or bridge construction projects on the horizon for the Greene County Secondary Roads Department slated for this year.

According to the five-year construction plan with the Iowa Department of Transportation, the only project slated for this construction season is a pavement widening project on County Road P-46, which is estimated to cost $1.2 million of farm to market funds. County Engineer Wade Weiss says in addition to that, the Secondary Roads Department will be doing some maintenance work on the supporting structure of some bridges like installing rip rap and improving the guardrails.

“We do have  three bridge deck overlays that we’re planning for in the future. That’s our attempt to not rebuild the entire structure if the substructure is okay. So we have three of those planned in our five-year program.”

Weiss notes local crews will also do various concrete patching projects throughout the county using temporary traffic signals for motorists. He explains the advantages of using local crews instead of hiring a contractor.

“Well we’re able to go out there and get it done when we need to rather than having to wait for someone to come in under their schedule. And then if we need to do one patch, we can go out and do one patch and pick the traffic signals up the next day. It’s really a very efficient way to handle it.”

Finally, Weiss notes they are doing a road project in conjunction with Dallas County of a two mile stretch of road north of Dawson later this year as well.
