Greene County and Nodaway Valley opened the 2021 high school baseball season against each other last night at Allensworth Field in Jefferson. After two delays for lightning and two hours of playing time to complete less than 4-1/2 innings, the contest was suspended at 10:27 p.m. The action was heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Greene County Activities Director Todd Gordon told Raccoon Valley Radio the non-conference contest would likely not be finished.

NV was leading 11-8 in the top of the fifth with two runners on, two runs in, and just one out, when the game was called. If five innings had been completed, it would have counted as an official game.

Joe Carey and Kole Teeples each had two-run doubles for the Rams. Justin Stream also doubled and Max Riley and Bryce Stalder contributed RBI singles. Ram pitchers walked 10 batters and hit two others, while NV pitchers walked six.

The Rams play tonight vs. Roland-Story in Story City to open the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference season. They’ll be shorthanded as some baseball starters are also starting tonight for the boys’ soccer team in a Class 1A Substate final.
