A new bill that was recently signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds allows parents or guardians to teach driver’s education to homeschooled children.

House District 20 Representative Ray Sorensen served on the original committee that started to develop the legislation. Sorensen shared his experience of when he went through his school district’s driver’s education with then Bridgewater-Fontanelle High School.

“In my driver’s ed course, we drove to Bridgewater once. My dad gave me my entire instruction probably from when I was way too young, to behind the wheel anyway, to when I was getting my license. Just one of those common sense things to allow the parent to do what they are already doing.”

Sorensen points out that the young drivers still have to take the required driving test through the Iowa Department of Transportation before they can obtain their driver’s license. He adds, the bill also addressed allowing kids to not have to be in their seats for the required test time if they finish the exam early. Click the link below to see Senate File 546.
