Greene County ISU Extension is helping 4-H’ers with some new county fair events, as well as promoting lesser known competitions ahead of next month’s county fair.

Extension Summer Intern Samantha Hardaway says a Show and Tell Workshop will be held on June 21st from 3-5pm at the Extension office in Jefferson. During the workshop, participants will learn about two new events, including Pride of Iowa and table setting. Hardaway says Pride of Iowa where 4-H’ers explain and demonstrate a recipe for a live audience. The other new event is table setting, where 4-H’ers can show a unique table setting and plan a menu for the judge.

Hardaway points out the other two activities, Share the Fun and working exhibits, will also be included in the workshop. She says Share the Fun is for any 4-H’er to showcase their talents, while a working exhibit teaches youth an interactive craft or activity that they could also take home. She describes her working exhibit she did, with a friend, when she competed in 4-H.

“We made Kool Aid chapstick at both the county level and state level. We found a Kool Aid chapstick recipe and had the kids mix it themselves in little Dixie cups with whatever flavoring they wanted and stuff. Then they would put it in the container and they had the opportunity to decorate the container and take that home with them. So that was just a really fun craft for them to do. It was super short, it took about 5 or 10 minutes max,and then they were able to go onto the next working exhibit.”

Registration deadline for the workshop is June 18th to the Extension office.
