vaccines

As parents are able to take their child that is 12 and older to get them vaccinated against COVID-19, there are some things to consider.

The only federally-approved vaccine for emergency for a child that is 12 and older is the two-shot Pfizer vaccine. According to the CDC, There have been cases of children getting the vaccine and developing heart inflammation and myocarditis. Guthrie County Public Health Director Jotham Arber says before getting your child vaccinated, make sure to cover your basis with your medical provider .

“If your child has blood issues, or a heart issue, or any sort of compounding factor that might make them more at risk for potential reaction to the vaccine or issue with other medication too, we would highly recommend you talk with your child’s pediatrician or cardiologist, if they have one.”

Arber suggests taking into account some people who have different biology and cannot take the shot. He does still recommend that kids 12 and older still get the vaccine if they are medically approved.

There are options in Guthrie County to get your child vaccinated. At the health department on Wednesdays by appointment from 9am-noon or any pharmacy. You can also check out the Guthrie County Health Department website for more information.
