Iowa is currently ranked seventh in the nation for most animal collisions in 2021 and deer make up a lot of those accidents-
Iowa State Patrol District 4 Resource Officer Shelby McCreedy says deer will be more on the move as we head into harvest season. She reminds motorists to be aware of your surroundings and know what to do incase of an incident.
“The biggest tip, and this is the catchphrase that everybody uses, is ‘don’t veer for deer’ and we try to educate the public to fight the instinct to swerve.”
Mccreedy says that swerving will put you in a far more dangerous situation that could be steering into ongoing traffic or a ditch. The best case scenario is slowing down as much as you can or hitting the animal.
