Greene County head baseball coach Matt Paulsen saw his team start the season with just two wins in the first 14 games, but the Rams won seven of their last nine in the regular season and finished at 9-15. He talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about his philosophy on the early season. “We have so many kids that are multi-sport athletes, which I like, but when baseball practice starts when golf, soccer, and track & field, are still in season, in makes it difficult for them to get the proper number of reps to successfully start the baseball season.”

The point the coach makes is backed up by the fact the team batting average went up substantially after the first 14 games and the number of walks the Rams issued went substantially down. During a five game winning streak, the team BA went up by 52 percentage points, a huge leap in a short span of games.

Coach Paulsen added that it isn’t ever a goal to play the best baseball in May or early June, but to play the best ball in late June and into July, and he thought the Rams did that for the most part. “Although it would be nice to get some more wins early to boost confidence and have a better record,” he commented.
