As people are continuing to enjoy summertime activities outdoors, it’s important to make sure you are getting and wearing the proper sunscreen.

Dallas County Health Department Public Information Officer Ann Cochran says it’s important to select the correct sunscreen including making sure it is Sun Protection Factor-30 or higher as anything lower may not protect you adequately. She talks about who should use sunscreen.

“Sunscreen is for everyone, not just for very pale-skinned persons. So, even if you think that you tan easily or you already have a tan, go ahead and use the sunscreen anyway. It’s a protection between you and the rays of the sun that can cause skin cancer.”

Cochran tells Raccoon Valley Radio people should regularly apply sunscreen and should do it more frequently if they are sweating a lot or engaging in activities that involve water. Cochran explains applying sunscreen.

“So, start out, shake the bottle really well and apply a generous amount. Remember places like the back of your neck and the tops of your ears. You should reapply sunscreen about every two hours while you’re out in the sun.”

Cochran says choosing the right SPF is more important for those who sunburn more easily.
