As the summer season winds down and fall coming up, there’s still plenty of time to enjoy outdoor camping.

Greene County Conservation Director Dan Towers says there are three county parks that offer camping, including Spring Lake, Hyde and Squirrel Hollow. Towers tells Raccoon Valley Radio Spring Lake Park offers both tent and recreational vehicle camping with electric hook-ups around the lake. It also offers non-motorized boats, as well as fishing, a basketball court, beach with a concession stand, a skating rink, walking trails and a disc golf course. Towers notes they just finished replacing the third of three pit latrines with a precast concrete structure, which were funded by Greene County Community Foundation grants.

“Not only are they a lot nicer latrine to use but being precast concrete if there’s some rough weather, with a bunch of campers out there, it’s the safest place for those guys to go.”

Towers points out the other two parks with camping availability is Hyde and Squirrel Hollow, which he says provides some scenic options for campers, like Squirrel Hollow.

“Squirrel Hollow we see a lot of tent campers. It’s a beautiful park, forested with big oaks and hickories (trees). So the road getting in and out of there is kind of tight, so we don’t see the big camping units down there that we see in other parks. It’s really popular for people with smaller campers and tents.”

Towers adds all three parks are pay as you go camping or camping sights can be reserved online by clicking the link below. You can also contact the Greene County Conservation Office at 515-386-5674.
