Several individuals from Greene County brought home top finishes from the Iowa State Fair.
In the open division, Marianne Carlson from Jefferson was second overall in the yeast roll competition and won a $150 gift card. Within that contest, Carlson earned first place for her cinnamon rolls with nuts and sweet rolls other than named.
Greene County 4-H also did well at the state fair. There were 21 blue ribbons awarded, along with 29 purple ribbons for livestock exhibits and 17 blue ribbons. Breanna Pope was the reserve champion for white face commercial ewe lamb, Emmalin Wright was reserve champion junior sheep showman and Cody Stephenson was reserve grand champion bantam for poultry. Greene County ISU Extension 4-H and Youth Coordinator Kayla Willms shares her thoughts on the progress each 4-H’er made from the county to the state fair.

“The kids do a fantastic job. Whether it’s a static project, a communications project, going on stage and stepping out of your comfort zone at a fashion show, and then also getting in the ring at state fair when everybody is watching you. There’s definitely a lot of excitement, a lot of nerves. They do a fantastic job.”
Greene County FFA had seven members compete at state fair. Some of the highlights included Emma Halterman as grand champion in both western type horses and pony breeds. Ethan Frederick was reserve grand champion chianina and Kyle Hughes was grand champion in spot breeding gilt.
Additionally, Calleigh Fitzpatrick was selected to show in the Governor’s Steer Show and Jacque Andrew was this year’s 4-H Hall of Fame Inductee. See the full list below of all the Greene County recipients from the state fair.
