As the early deer hunting seasons get underway in Iowa, the Greene County Recorder’s office has some reminders for area hunters.

Greene County Recorder Deb McDonald tells Raccoon Valley Radio the Iowa Department of Natural Resources has once again not issued any antlerless deer tags. She says the way the those deer tags are allocated is by doing a flyover of each county and counting the deer herds. She adds, it’s been at least five years since the last time Greene County was issued any antlerless deer tags. However, the surrounding counties like Guthrie County started with 2,150 tags, Dallas County had 2,100 and Boone County ended up with 300.

McDonald notes Greene County hunters can purchase antlerless tags from another county, but those tags can only be used in that county.

Youth and disabled deer hunting season is now underway until October 3rd. McDonald reminds youth that they must have a licensed adult with a habitat stamp with them when they are hunting. McDonald says youth is anyone under the age of 16 don’t need a hunting license.

Additionally, McDonald adds hunters can purchase an early muzzleloader tag, which is a statewide program that starts with 7,500 and is first come, first served. As of last week, McDonald says there were over 3,000 tags left. Early muzzleloader season is from October 16th-24th.
