Fireworks discussions continue to remain at the top of the list at Perry City Council meetings, as Council and city staff continue to move forward.

City Administrator Sven Peterson says the conversations continue to be about whether or not to allow the discharge of fireworks in Perry, and whether or not to restrict where sales of fireworks can happen. Peterson says the opinions in the beginning were to outright ban fireworks use in Perry but the discussions have opened up a bit more.

“Some of the discussion has come back around to the fact that we have kind of made it an issue that it’s so intense on that one day on the Fourth of July because that’s the only day that it is legal so sort of a little bit of a problem that maybe we created through our ordinance process by only allowing them on the Fourth.”

Peterson tells Raccoon Valley Radio the discussions have turned to still the potential for banning fireworks use completely or potentially allowing more time for people to use fireworks to spread out the time they are set off. Peterson lays out out a possible timeline for potential changes.

“Staff hope to put together a draft ordinance or at least a few options for Council to really consider and read through. Another open forum and opportunity to speak at that Council meeting but very well could be an ordinance first reading on the Council meeting on October 4th.”

Peterson reminds people that if anyone has opinions or thoughts they would like to share about fireworks they can reach out to Council members through the City of Perry website which can be found here.
