After being voted into a national hall of fame earlier this year, a local recreational trail held its induction ceremony Thursday.

The Raccoon River Valley Trail was recently voted into the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Hall of Fame and an event was held Thursday in Perry featuring various guests including Dallas County Conservation Board Director Mike Wallace who said it was an honor to even be nominated.

“This goes all the way back to the initial efforts started back in the 80’s. So, to come all this way now (in) 2021 and have that special recognition for what we’ve done through all three counties, Greene, Guthrie and Dallas County, for this very special trail system is a very good thing.”

Wallace told Raccoon Valley Radio there are some upcoming projects that are planned including connecting the Raccoon River Valley Trail to the High Trestle Trail, as well as some rehabilitation projects that will take place along the trail.

The Raccoon River Valley Trail went up against New Hampshire’s Northern Rail Trail and Deleware’s Georgetown-Lewes Trail and Junction and Breakwater Trail and came away with the selection for the hall of fame.
