Perry swimmers competed in the 2021 IGHSAU Regional Meet at Ankeny on Saturday, Nov 6.

It was a banner day for Perry Swimming.  Perry finished 6th out of 10 teams.

The 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle Relays qualified for state.  This are the first relays to qualify for State since 1998.

200 Medley Relay  Sophia McDevitt, Quin Mahler-Moreno, Jaylene Karolus, Lilly Riley 5th place scoring 28 points for Perry, 1:55.08 dropping more than 4 seconds from their season best relay time.  This time also broke a school record held since 1998, Sholley, Dowd, Weiser, Larson.  The old time was 1:57.19.

Every individual swim event entered by Perry had personal best times.

200 Freestyle Emily Dowd dropped 2.15 seconds, personal best time, 2:28.74 finishing 17th, Jenna Nelson, dropped 2.70 seconds, personal best time of 2:17.24, finishing 13th, scoring 4 points for Perry.

50 Freestyle Hailey Peterson, personal best time, 28th place, 38.49 dropping -.24 seconds. Jenna Nelson, personal best time, 29.70,dropping -.14 seconds, scoring 1 point. Jaylene Karolus, personal best time and lowered her own school record and qualified for a return trip to the state meet next weekend, 2nd place finish, scoring 17 points, 24.74 dropping -.35 seconds.

100 Butterfly- Sophia McDevitt, 8th place, 1:04.55, personal best time, dropping -1.21 seconds, scoring 11 points,  Jaylene Karolus, 2nd place, scoring 17 points, 1:00.22, dropping -2.15 sec, personal best time, new school record.  Jaylene qualified for state in this event. The record was previously held by Janae Weiser, 1:01.33 set in 1998.

100 FreestyleEmily Dowd, 1:07.27, personal best time, dropping -2.06 seconds, 16th place, scoring 1 point.

500 Freestyle- Quin Mahler- Moreno, 3rd place, 16 points, 5:13.75 personal best time, dropping -6.92 seconds from her own school record and qualifying for the state meet next weekend.

200 Freestyle Relay- Jenna Nelson, Hailey Peterson, Emily Dowd, Lilly Riley 9th place,2:07.25,  scoring 18 points, with a season best time for this relay grouping, dropping -2.63 seconds.

100 Backstroke- Sophia McDevitt, 8th place, scoring 11 points, personal best time of  1:04.67, dropping -1.76 seconds.

100 Breaststroke- Quin Mahler-Moreno, 4th place, 1:08.62, personal best time, dropping -2.65 seconds and setting a new school record, qualifying for the state meet in Marshalltown next weekend.  The old record was held by Christina Dowd and was set in 1988 with a time of 1:10.15.

400 Free Relay- Jaylene Karolus, Lilly Riley, Sophia McDevitt, Quin Mahler Moreno, 4th place, 3:47.62, dropping -8.62 seconds.  This broke anther school record held since 1998, Larson, Rasmussen, Dowd, Weiser of 3:52.89. This relay will also swim at Marshalltown next Saturday.   Jaylene Karolus also broke her own 100 Free school record on the lead of leg of this relay.  She swam a 54.94.  Her old record was a 55.08 set at the state meet last year.

Individual event prelims are held Friday night in Marshalltown.  Saturday are the relay events and finals for individual events.

Coach Dowd will also receive the Golden Plaque Award for distinguished coaching in the sport of swimming at the Saturday session.  This is only the 9th time this award has been given.
