Following last week’s city/school board elections, the Jefferson City Council will remain the same for at least two more years.

There were three of five council seats available with all incumbents winning re-election, including Darren Jackson, Harry Ahrentholtz and Pat Zmolek. Jackson was first appointed to fill a vacancy on the council in 2019. A special election petition was submitted and Jackson also won the election in June of that year. Now that he begins his first four-year term on Council, Jackson explains the projects he is most excited for.

Pat Zmolek

“I think that we have lots of ideas about what things need to be done, perhaps with the green space over by the middle school, with new sidewalks and finishing up some of the sewer repair, not just with the new sewer plant, but with some of the water main things. And then getting some of the buildings finished on the square and getting new businesses in there. I think that’s very exciting.”

Ahrentholtz was first elected to city council in 2013 and will serve his third four-year term. He believes that winning another re-election bid is a vote of confidence from Jefferson residents. He explains his motivation behind running again for council.

“New things crop up (and) new opportunities come along. Some things that crop up don’t look like opportunities at the outset, but oftentimes they are to act and make this city a better place for citizens to live in, and hopefully attract more new businesses and more new residents to live in this city.”

All three election winners were certified after the Greene County Board of Supervisors canvass the votes at their meeting this past Monday.
