Greene County Public Health has started administering COVID-19 vaccines to younger children.
Following the emergency use approval of the Pfizer pediatric COVID-19 vaccine, Greene County Public Health Director Becky Wolf says they have given about 60 shots to kids ages 5-11. She explains some of the reasons why some parents haven’t chosen to get their child vaccinated.
“There’s some people that are maybe a little bit leery of giving their kid a vaccine or maybe they just want to wait and see how other kids do first. So whenever you’re ready, give us a call and we’ll be happy to get your kid vaccinated.”
Wolf assures everyone that the vaccine is safe, as it has been deemed by the Food and Drug Administration as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“It’s just as effective with the kids, if not more. You have to remember that whenever we give a kids a vaccine regardless of what it is, children are born with very robust immune systems, they have very robust response to vaccines. Which is why we give so many when they’re younger to start having that immunity produced.”
Wolf says there haven’t been any real side effects reported for children who have received the first dose of the Pfizer pediatric vaccine. Public Health will have two additional vaccine clinics tomorrow and Wednesday for kids 5-11 from 9am-noon at the public health office at Greene County Medical Center.
