With the Thanksgiving holiday comes the next law enforcement initiative through the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau.

Iowa State Patrol District 4 Resource Officer Trooper Shelby McCreedy says they are anticipating even more vehicles on the road than ever before because of the pandemic that made people uneasy about traveling at this point last year. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio for the next five days, increased law enforcement will be on the road as part of the ABC’s of driving, which is Always Be Careful.

“Just be cognizant of the four tenets of safety, which is (using) seatbelts, impairment, do not drive impaired; no distracting and then excessive speed.”

McCreedy shares a statistic about the average traffic fatalities that happen during this time period.

“The five year average for fatal crashes over the Thanksgiving holiday, which is the five day reporting period, is 4.2. Last year, three lives were lost over that reporting period. So obviously the goal for this year is to keep everybody alive, healthy and safe to and from their destination.”

The initiative is from Wednesday through Sunday.
