The Dallas County Board of Supervisors recently approved the redistricting map of Dallas County after the release of the 2020 U.S. Census data.
Supervisor Mark Hanson says with the release of the 2020 U.S. Census data the population for Dallas County rose to a little more than 99,000 people up from the 2010 census. Hanson explains what that means for the supervisors district’s and how some larger cities in Dallas County play into the districts.
“If you take the 99,000 number from the census, that means that each supervisor district has to have approximately 33,000 in each district. So, when they look at the map you can’t split up Waukee but you could add Clive to it or Dallas Center to it to come up with that number that would be pretty close to 33,000.”
Hanson tells Raccoon Valley Radio the increase in population didn’t cause drastic changes to the supervisor districts but the Board is still currently working on the reprecincting of Dallas County.
“You want to make sure that everybody in that precinct is voting for the same state senator and state legislature so there are going to be some tweaks and modifications out in rural Dallas County but it should not be too significant.”
With the recent approval of the redistricting maps, the Supervisors will eventually take the second step of approving the reprecincting maps at a future meeting.
