An annual event will soon take place in Dallas County for people to have fun bird watching.
The Dallas County Christmas Bird Count will take place on December 18th and will divide participants into groups with an experienced birder to look for what birds are in the area. Dallas County Conservation Board Outreach Coordinator Sarah Gilchrist explains more about the event.
“Volunteers can go out to different areas to observe. It could be literally in the field or even sometimes we have people stationed at bird feeders from their home, their own property, it really varies where we can station people.”
Gilchrist tells Raccoon Valley Radio participants will count birds throughout the day, which usually begins with a hike in the morning. Gilchrist explains the purpose of the bird count.
“Mike Havlik, our local bird enthusiast and expert is the guy who organizes all of that and puts the information together. That is then sent on to the Audubon Society so that they can track bird populations and trends.”
Registration is required to attend the event and can be done here.
