For one Perry tradition that was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic, 2021 will feature its return.

Las Posadas is set for December 16th this year, beginning with a service at 6 p.m. at the First Christian Church. Perry Public Library Director Mary Murphy says this year will include a meal. Las Posadas is a traditional Latino Christmas celebration telling the story of Mary and Joseph’s journey to find a safe place to deliver Jesus.

“It is a wonderful tradition and this year we are going to have a free-will donation dinner that will sponsor scholarships and then after the dinner we are going to have a storyteller (that) the library is sponsoring a storyteller Marlu Abarca and a craft and dancing after that. So, it is a family friendly holiday event.”

Murphy says it feels good to have the celebration returning this year but they will continue to be cautious.

“I’ve got to say that I like it, however we are very cautious because of all the variants that have popped up across the world and what we have learned is that you have to take care of your own health.”
