The Raccoon Valley Radio-listening area will be hit with not only high winds but also potential for severe weather later today.
According to the National Weather Service, Greene, Dallas and Guthrie counties are currently under a high wind warning through midnight tonight. There is also a potential for severe weather as the Raccoon Valley Radio-listening area is also under a moderate risk, which is the fourth highest category of severe weather of the five levels.
Weatherology Meteorologist Jennifer Wojcicki says while the threat of severe weather is from 4-8pm, the peak for west central Iowa is primarily during the evening commute from 5-7pm. These storms could be more serious because of the high wind warning, with winds gusting as high as 65 miles per hour.
“A thunderstorm to become severe at 60mph, So that’s going to be the main concern tonight. The main concern will be between 5pm to 7pm and I would say probably a little bit more in the six o’clock hour, as that storm continues to kind of intensify for the evening. We can’t rule out some hail, but that’s going to be the smallest amount of severe weather that we might see, and there’s some tornado potential as well.”
Additionally, the National Weather Service has also issued a tornado watch for Greene, Dallas and Guthrie counties until 8pm.
