Following the passage of a federal infrastructure bill, a Republican Representative for Iowa did not support the measure in the House.
Iowa’s Fourth Congressional District Representative Randy Feenstra voted against the $1 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, with his main issue that he claims is the bill hooked in an overhaul of tax incentives instead of solely focusing on infrastructure. He believes the spending with this bill and others by the Democratic-controlled legislative and executive branches will continue to drive up inflation.
“We have runaway inflation going on right now. I mean you go to the grocery store, the hardware store, clothing store, we’re spending anywhere from 7-15-percent more on our goods, much less gas where we’re spending $0.40-$0.80 more. That’s where I was looking at saying, ‘Hey, you know what? We’re $30 trillion in debt already, we can’t continue to add more debt to what we already have.”
Congresswoman Cindy Axne says of the newly signed federal legislation, $3.4 billion will be dedicated to improving Iowa’s highways. However, Feenstra reports over $700 million of federal COVID-19 relief is already going to Iowa’s infrastructure and he believes the state does a good job of updating its roads and bridges when funds are available to do so.
