Greene County entered Saturday afternoon’s non-conference boys’ basketball game in Jefferson vs. Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) on a four-game winning streak. It left the gym with a 78-57 loss, allowing a team that had not shot the ball well in a 2-4 start to the season to score 21 points over its average. The loss dropped the Rams to 4-3 while the Knights improved to 3-4 and won its third game in a row, all on the road.

The Rams fell behind 6-0 and turned the ball over on its first three possessions before taking a 9-7 lead. That was the only lead Coach Chris Nelson’s Rams would have as the Knights were up 22-13 after one quarter and 44-36 at the half. It was 63-51 at the end of the third period and the reserves for both teams finished out the last few minutes after the Knights kept building the lead.

Kuemper Catholic made seven of 12 shots from three-point range in the first half and finished eight of 19 after entering the game at 25% from beyond the arc. The Rams were six of 24 on three-pointers, right at their season average. Both teams came into the contest shooting in the mid-50’s from the free throw line, but the Knights went 11 of 14 and the Rams were nine of 14.

Dawson Gifford scored 24 ad Dennis Vonnahme added 18 for the Knights. The Rams had 18 points from Richard Daugherty, 17 in the first half, 13 by Bryce Stalder, and 11 points from Jesse Miller.

Greene County ends the December portion of the schedule tomorrow night in Jefferson when Nevada visits for a girl/boy doubleheader on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
