Some Jefferson-area youngsters recently received recognition for their writing skills.

American Legion Post #11 in Jefferson announced its top finishers for the “Fifth Grade Flag Essay Contest.”  American Legion Auxiliarian Barb Labate says the essay contest allows youth to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. flag. It also instills knowledge of proper flag etiquette and respect for this country’s flag and what it symbolizes.

Ave Hinote won first place and will have the opportunity to recite her essay during the Memorial Day service at the Jefferson City Cemetery later this year. Lucas Daniel received second place and Alaina Gettler was in third place. The American Legion thanks Greene County Fifth Grade Teacher Kim Braun for her continued support of the essay contest.
