The most recent Perry City Council meeting included the approval of tax abatement applications for residential construction completed in Perry.

City Administrator Sven Peterson says the applications featured a good mix of new residential construction as well as improvements to existing residential properties. Peterson says 2021 was a good year for housing development.

“All in all I think for 2021 we saw 18 new home permits. So, all throughout town in the Sunflower area as well as over on 28th Street and some others throughout town. So, another strong year for our residential development. We had new apartments come online, I think 30 units over on 28th Street, and filled up within a matter of months.”

Peterson tells Raccoon Valley Radio tax abatement applications are usually done two to four times throughout the year depending on how many permits are coming in. The abatement program lowers the amount of property tax homeowners pay on new construction, rehabilitation and/or major improvements.

The first slate of tax abatement applications were approved at the January 18th Perry City Council meeting.
