When the six Greene County wrestlers who qualified for the Class 2A District 2 tournament in Glenwood at 11 a.m. this Saturday, take to the mats, they’ll be attempting to qualify for the Feb. 17-18-19 State Tournament in Des Moines. In the process, several will be seeking season or career milestones, or adding to records they already have.

The Rams had three Sectional 4 Champions last Saturday in Harlan in juniors Kale Petersen (120) and McKinley Robbins (132), and sophomore Gavin Scheuermann (152). Also qualifying for the district as second place sectional finishers were seniors Brenner Gallagher (138), Nathan Black (160), and Noble Hoyt (182).

Petersen has won (   ) matches in a row dating back to last season when he won the Class 1A 106 lbs. State title for West Fork (Sheffield). He began the school year at Greene County and because his family did not establish residency here, he wasn’t eligible to wrestle until the 91st school day, which coincided with the last week of the regular season. He’s 7-0 for the Rams with five falls and two technical falls.

Robbins won the Class 2A 120 lbs. title last February for Greene County and he’s already set several program records. His 111-5 career mark is the highest winning percentage (95.6%) in the history of the program for anyone with more than one varsity season, and he’s 40-3 this season with 27 falls.

Scheuermann is 38-6 as a sophomore and he already has 21 more victories than a season ago when he qualified for State at 145 lbs.

Gallagher is 31-18 this season and has 98 career victories. He’ll wrestle either two or three matches Saturday, so the century mark in wins is within reach, as is his second State appearance after finishing in the top 12 at 113 lbs. in 2020.

Black is 32-7 this season and is seeking his first trip to State in wrestling. He has participated in five high school sports and has been on State qualifying football and soccer teams, as well as in track & field in the high jump and on relays. Black has the opportunity to be one of a very few athletes in the history of Jefferson-based sports to be a State participant in four different sports.

Hoyt is 23-20 and has clinched a winning season for the first time in his career. He began at 113 lbs. as a freshman and ends his career at 182.

Raccoon Valley Radio will have District wrestling reports on all three stations from six sites covering all three classes this Saturday.
