As the forecast turns to warmer temperatures, it appears the recent cold snap has ended.

Weatherology Meteorologist Michael Carow tells Raccoon Valley Radio the average daytime high for this time of year is the lower 30s and last week ended the daytime highs in the teens and single digits. He talks about the issues that the recent arctic blasts of cold air have brought to west central Iowa.

“I think the main culprit, and not only just the cold temperatures, but we’ve had a lot of winds. I think the most remarkable thing about our cold snap that we’ve had the past couple of weeks has been some weak, passing clipper type systems that don’t necessarily bring a whole lot of snow, but they really whip up the winds. I think that’s the more notable thing that we’ve been noticing with this pattern that we’ve been in.”

Carow says February 21st might be the first opportunity that we could see daytime highs back in the teens. He adds to be aware of any remaining snow melting during the day, but then refreezing overnight as the overnight low temperatures will continue to be in the 20s and teens.
