Greene County hosted Saydel (Des Moines) Tuesday night in the high school gym in Jefferson in the last Heart of Iowa Activities Conference basketball games this season for all four teams. Greene County won the girls’ game 41-24 and the Eagles took the boys’ contest by a 70-63 final. Both games were heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
Greene County ended the girls’ regular season with a 3-18 record and they were 1-13 in the HOIAC. Saydel also went 1-13 in conference play and is 1-19 overall. The only Ram senior on the team, Brianna Habben, was honored on Senior Night, as were the boys’ basketball seniors and senior cheerleaders. Habben scored 16 points, hauled in 21 rebounds, and blocked seven shots. Junior Emma Hoyle added 13 points. Greene County led 20-16 at intermission and the lead grew to as many as 15 points late in the game.
The boys’ game saw the Eagles improve to 9-11 and they finished 6-8 in the HOIAC. Greene County is also 9-11 and is 8-6. Saydel made 20 free throws (in 30 attempts) and sank 10 three-point field goals, both were well above their season averages. The 20 points are 21 more than they averaged in their first 19 games. Greene County was 0-1 at the foul line and made nine three’s and Coach Chris Nelson’s team tried to come back from a slow start on offense. Trailing 28-19 at the half, the Rams fell down by 15 points at 55-40 in the fourth quarter. The teams combined for 60 total fourth quarter points with 31 by the Rams, but the comeback fell short. Saydel had 23 points from Mason Hicks, who averaged 9.2 entering the game. Shine Lo had 17 points with Camden Lo at 14 and Judd Roberts 13. The Rams had a 17 point fourth quarter from Richard Daugherty, who finished with 19 points. Bryce Stalder scored 11 of his 15 points in the last quarter and Max Riley had 12 for the game with Jesse Miller at 11.
Greene County boys have one regular season game left. It’s a JV/varsity doubleheader in Treynor tomorrow night and the varsity game can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com around 7:30 p.m.
