Ankeny Christian Academy defeated Paton-Churdan in a Class 1A Region 2 first round girls’ basketball game on Thursday night at ACA by a 47-38 score. The Eagles advance to the next round with a 12-9 record while the Rockets finish a season with too few girls, illness, injuries, postponements, cancellations, and forfeits, at 0-18.
The final score doesn’t tell the whole story as the Rockets came out with the offense firing better than it has all season in the first half. Led by senior Carmyn Paup, P-C scored 15 points in each of the first two quarters and led 30-17 at halftime. The lead didn’t last and the offense went cold with just eight second half points while the Eagles scored 30 after halftime. Paup had 23 points on eight of 28 shooting from the floor and six of 13 from the free throw line. She made one of nine shots from three-point range, and had nine rebounds, six steals, and four assists. Junior Emma Stream added six points, six rebounds, and three assists.
The P-C boys play in Glidden tonight vs. Glidden-Ralston in a Class 1A District opener. The two Rolling Valley Activities Conference rivals split their two regular season meetings.
