Greene County and Winterset in Class 2A, Waukee and Waukee Northwest in 3A have wrestlers in the State Wrestling Tournament semifinal round at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

In 2A, Juniors Kale Petersen at 120 lbs. and McKinley Robbins at 132 lbs. are the Greene County wrestlers to advance while sophomore Gavin Scheuermann 152 lbs.) suffered a consolation loss and his tournament is over. Petersen won a 16-1 technical fall while Robbins scored three points in the last 12 seconds to win 7-5 over ADM sophomore Aiden Flora, who later became a top eight place winner by getting a second round consolation round victory.

Junior Carter Smuck for Winterset advanced to the 195 lbs. semifinal with a fall in 3:16. The Huskies have freshman Logan Fairchild as a top eight place winner at 160 lbs. after he lost in the q’finals, but won in the consolation second round.

Waukee Northwest leads the area 3A contingent with three in the finals and five on the consolation side. Coach Chad Vollmecke’s Wolves are in third place with 70 points, just 1/2 points behind Waverly-Shell Rock. Southeast Polk is the leader with 87 points. In the semis for the Wolves are Koufax Christensen (113), Carter Freeman (120), Griffin Gammel (182), and Ben Reiland (285). Colin Driscoll for Waukee is in the 170 lbs. semifinal.

Consolation wrestlers for Waukee NW are Ethan Mahoney (126), Dom Rubino (145), Brayden Broderick (160), Tanner Spyksma (195), and Cael Winter (220). Waukee HS has Blake Hauck (182) still going on the consolation side of the bracket.

Class 1A takes the mats at Wells Fargo at 2:30 p.m. for quarterfinals, followed by 2A semifinals and third consolation matches, with the 1A consolation second round rounding out the afternoon session.
