Dallas Center – Grimes Mustangs basketball played in championship action on Monday night for Class 3A Substate 6, and were able to use a big second half, holding Newton to 10 points in a 56-31 victory. For DCG, another victory puts them up to 19-5 on the season and Newton will close out the year at 13-11.

It was a very back and forth first half, as DCG and Newton struggled to score from the field, with both teams missing some open threes, but were able to find multiple buckets inside. DCG took a 23-21 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter, DCG came out swinging, as they ramped up the defensive pressure, and were able to get multiple Cole Glasgow layups, and big back to back threes from seniors Jacob Runyan and Jackson Jones outscoring Newton 20-2 in the quarter. The Mustangs never looked back as they melted clock in the fourth quarter to secure their second consecutive trip to state.

Glasgow lead DCG in scoring with 19 points, as he made multiple highlight worthy plays, including a pair of crowd pleasing dunks.

The win was the third of the year for the Mustangs over the Cardinals, all by double figures, and the 10th in the last 11 in the series.

For DCG, they will be learning about their first round opponent tomorrow. They do know that their first round game will be played at Wells Fargo Arena on Tuesday, March 8th, as they will look to keep up the excellent play next week.
