
The Missouri Valley Conference wrapped up its indoor track & field championships Monday afternoon at Gately Park in Chicago and Carter Morton of Jefferson scored points in two events for the University of Northern Iowa Panthers.
Morton placed second in the heptathlon (7 events) with 5,229 points, trailing only Illinois State’s Ariel Arias at 5,352. The 2020 Greene County High School graduate was third after Sunday’s first four heptathlon events, then started strong Monday morning by finishing second in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.38 seconds and scored 888 points, his highest total in any of the seven events. He went into second place overall with a third place showing in the pole vault, adding 760 points with a clearance of 14′ 9″. The seventh and final event was the 1,000 meter run, which he did while competing in the open high jump. Morton was clocked in 3:01.40 and another 651 points gave him, 5,229 for the two days, 144 points ahead of the third place finisher. As the conference runner-up, Morton earned All-Conference honors in the heptathlon.
In the open high jump Monday afternoon, he cleared 6′ 6-3/4″, good for sixth place, and more points for his team, which finished third behind Indiana State and Illinois State. The conference meet ended the indoor regular season for the Panthers.
