
In the first half of the 3A semifinals between the Dallas Center – Grimes Mustangs and the Winterset Huskies, both teams traded shots in a quick paced game with both teams tied at half. The second half was a different story, as DCG was able to hold Winterset to only 29% shooting in the half and 32% in the game, winning with ease 63-46. The win marks the first ever state championship game for the Mustangs.
The win improves DCG to 21-5 on the year and Winterset will conclude their wonderful year with a 20-6 record.
DCG was able to battle through a big Winterset run early by relying on Cole Glasgow’s ability to work a zone, putting up 9 points in the first half. Winterset lead the majority of the first half leading by 5 late, but DCG was able to get a big three from Troy Peitzman and a Jackson Jones layup to tie the game up.
In the second half, DCG was able to knock down five threes in the third quarter outscoring Winterset 18-6, and never looked back as they were able to lead by as much as 25 late in the fourth.
Winterset was the second best scoring team in 3A coming into the contest at 66 points per game, but was held well below their season average, only the third time this year they didn’t score at least 50.
Senior Jackson Jones was able to put together another great game with 19 points, including major threes in the third to help give DCG breathing room. Glasgow was able to chip in with 13 points include being on the receiving end of an alley-oop that fired up the crowd.
Mustangs basketball will be aiming for their first ever state championship today when they take on a hot Central DeWitt Sabers club. Tip off from Des Moines will be happening at 5 o’clock.
