winterset-3

After reaching their second state semifinal appearance in the last four years, the Winterset Huskies were looking to make the 3A tournament final on Thursday, but ran into a cold shooting stretch in the second half falling by the score of 63-46. Winterset ends their season at 20-6, with the 20 wins the highest in at least the last 15 years for Husky program, and at least 17 wins in four of the last five years.

Husky basketball had a great start to the game, as they took a very quick 6-0 lead barely a minute into the game, and lead 15-7 at 2:21 in the first quarter after a Charlie McDonald three. DCG started to cut the lead, as Winterset struggle to knock down shots, tying the game up at 27 at half.

DCG was tough in the third quarter, as Winterset only shoot 1-7 in the frame and had four turnovers as well, trailing by 12 going into the 4th. DCG continue to make plays down the stretch and distance themselves, ending the Winterset upset chance and ending the season.

Senior Levi Gurwell was able to put up 17 points in the game and junior Charlie McDonald was able to add 10 points. The team only shot 4-25 from beyond the arc.

The Huskies have nothing to be ashamed off in their semifinal run, representing their community well throughout the week, and were able to battle adversity and emotion to win their quarterfinals Tuesday.

Winterset will be graduating six seniors off of their roster including four starters, but do have good players coming back next year, as they will look to reload and contend in the Raccoon River Conference.
