After roughly a month and a half Guthrie County received its reprecincting  map from the state and one supervisor described the process as a state power grab.

Supervisor Mike Dickson says the Guthrie County Redistricting Commission had their proposed map in on time and it was accepted by the Secretary of State’s Office but denied by the Legislative Service Agency after the deadline of January 15th. The LSA is a third party entity that is in charge of redistricting the state of Iowa maps) He states that Guthrie County never got a chance to fix the corrections to their districts.

“The state imposed this on us. We don’t have a choice on it, they left us with no time to deny it and work on a different map. They didn’t. They waited until the last minute to give us a map. And so now we don’t have any choice but to take what they and their exact wording was. They’re imposing it on us.”

Dickson tells Raccoon Valley Radio about the changes to the map.

“Our map was designed for less people, having (to) drive very far to go vote. And the map that we’ve received from the Secretary of State is a map where actually more people are going to have to drive farther to go vote.”

Dickson says it was a big push to get this done in a timely manner so people could get their papers and signatures in for elected positions for the filling period.
