As avian influenza has been detected in Iowa, it’s important to know how to keep your birds safe from the illness.
Dallas County Health Department Public Information Officer Ann Cochran says people need to try and keep wild birds away from their flock. Cochran says birds can shed avian influenza multiple ways including through saliva and feces.
“So, if you have backyard flocks of chickens, turkeys, ducks or geese, take a good look at each bird daily. Signs of the viral disease include coughing, sneezing, swollen combs or eyelids, feather loss and a reduction in laying. If you notice a sick bird among your flock, call your veterinarian immediately so they can determine if your bird is infected with the avian influenza.”
Cochran tells Raccoon Valley Radio that avian influenza can be difficult to keep out of your flock of birds. Cochran talks about things you can do to protect your birds.
“Reduce the number of people allowed to be among your birds to avoid contamination. You may have noticed recently that the commercial poultry producers are tightening down their biosecurity practices.”
