Sunday is National Peace Officer Memorial Day and it’s a time to reflect on those law enforcement officials who gave their lives in the line of duty.
According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, there have been six officers killed in the line of duty in the Raccoon Valley Radio-listening area since records were kept starting in 1868. In Greene County, Jefferson City Marshal John Swearingen was shot and killed on June 21, 1902 and Paton Town Marshal James Busby was also shot and killed on May 7, 1911.

In Guthrie County, the Stuart Police Department has had three deaths. Police Chief Robert Smith was killed during an assault on August 13, 2010. The other two officers were Night Marshals with Charles Loucks that was also killed in an assault on December 25, 1954 and John Myers who was shot and killed on March 30, 1921.
For Dallas County, a Minburn Night Marshal died in the line of duty when he was shot on July 27, 1931 with Virgil Untied.
Take time Sunday to remember those who have given their lives and those who continue to serve and protect the public as law enforcement officials.
