There was an isolated shooting incident in Adair County Thursday morning.

The Adair County Sheriff’s Office responded to a man shot after originally responding to a reported stolen vehicle Thursday morning.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at 3am to a vehicle that was on the side of the median on Interstate 35 near the Adair rest stop. During the investigation, the vehicle had crashed and no driver was located, but it was also discovered that the vehicle was reported stolen by  the Omaha Police Department.

At 4am there was a 911 call about a suspected intruder who tried to break into a rural home southwest of Casey. The suspected intruder was shot by the homeowner who heard noises that sounded like breaking glass and thought the intruder was trying to break into the home. According to the report, it’s believed the sole resident of the home determined the suspect had unlawfully attempted to enter his home through a broken window.

The suspect was eventually taken by an air-ambulance to a Des Moines area hospital where he is receiving treatment for multiple gunshot wounds.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has been requested to assist with the investigation.

The Adair County Sheriff’s Office, the Stuart Police Department, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Adair Fire and Rescue and the Adair County Ambulance assisted at the scene. No other information is available at this time.
