A tradition returns to Greene County this weekend for youngsters interested in an outdoor sport.

The free Kids Fishing Derby is taking place at Spring Lake Park and hosted by Greene County Conservation on Sunday from 9am-noon. There will be three age divisions, including 4-8, 9-12 and 13-15 year olds, with prizes awarded for each age group. Additionally, there will be door prizes so that every participant will receive something from the derby, regardless of how they finish.

Greene County Conservation Director Tanner Scheuermann says kids don’t need to worry if they don’t have a fishing pole or bait in order to join the fun.

“We can supply all of that. We’ve got a couple racks of poles, so if kids want to come out and just try their hand at fishing, they don’t need to go out and spend money on all the tackle. We’ll provide free bait, free nightcrawlers and things for everybody to use. It’s a great event to get people out maybe that haven’t fished before or haven’t fished in a long time to come out and maybe get their kid interested.”

No pre-registration is necessary and the derby is free to join.
