National Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month is coming to a close in June but continues to affect people year around.

Program Director for Senior Life Solutions Dianne Allsup says a common misconception about PTSD is that it’s only associated with war events but she says the reaction to trauma exposure has evolved.

Examples of other traumatic events that can trigger PTSD are like car crashes, shootings, which, you know, there’s a lot of those right now. So fires, if somebody experienced a fire in their home, that can be very traumatic. Abuse, neglect, violence and assault and even something that most people don’t realize. But,  as simple as a fall with a fracture that can actually trigger PTSD and in some people.”

Allsup encourages those who may have PTSD to seek treatment because it is treatable through therapy or medication.

But you know what, today’s research and all of that, there’s some pretty good and effective treatments like group therapy, counseling, and definitely some like some antidepressants or something that might help.”
