This is “Camp Week” for many Greene County High School athletes with official practices for all high school Fall sports in Iowa starting on August 8.
Greene County returns veteran head coaches in all three fall sports. Chris Heisterkamp returns to lead the volleyball program, with Jeff Lamoureux back as the girls and boys cross-country head coach, and Caden Duncan enters year number four as the head football coach.
The volleyball Rams have the most varsity experience returning of the three sports with the majority of starters and a bevy of letter winners back after turning in a winning season in 2021.
There has been a lack of numbers in cross-country, especially on the girls’ side last season. The boys’ team graduated some of its faster runners, but they had solid numbers a season ago. Injuries and illness hampered the boys team in 2021.
More than likely the fingers on one hand is all a person will need to count the number of seniors on the football team, but there is certainly talent among that group. The Rams won the Class 2A District 8 title, advanced to the second round of the playoffs, and were 8-2 overall and ranked as high as number three in the polls. The squad is young, but the talent for another fine season appears to be there. Coach Duncan is a combined 24-7 in his previous three years here.
